A Little About Us

Pierson Township is a marvelous rural community situated on the western edge of Montcalm County in the Panhandle Area. Pierson Township offers a pleasant rural country lifestyle which is enjoyed by the township residents. The 131 expressway traverses the Township from the southern border to the northern border, allowing for a quick commute to the bustling urban amenities offered by the metropolitan Grand Rapids area just 30 minutes to the south and Big Rapids just 30 minutes to the north.

Boasting a pleasant grouping of lakes and rural residential areas on the western side of the township, there is a larger concentration of farm acreage to the east of US 131 expressway. We are the eleventh township formed in Montcalm County. It was officially organized on Feb. 17, 1857. It was named after the family name of Pierson; which had several members as settlers in the township.

Pierson Township is one of the fastest growing areas in Montcalm County. The 1990 census listed the population as 2177. In the 2010 census it had dramatically increased to 3216. A little over 19% of the housing units are seasonal as compared to 31% in 1990. Many of our residents find it an asset to be able to live in Pierson Township and commute the short distance to the Grand Rapids and Big Rapids areas to work, shop and pursue recreational activities.
